NELDHA's Spotlight on our Members!
On January 7, 2010, Carol Stocker in the Boston Globe highlighted NELDHA member
Kim Smith’s recent publication Oh Garden of Fresh Possibilities! Notes From a Gloucester Garden, (David R. Godine, $35). Ms. Stocker praised Kim’s book as “…a treasure, and perhaps the best garden gift book. Why? Both dream-like and practical, it captures the rapture of a gardener’s journey through her own evolving quarter acre by integrating Smith’s personal essays, hands-on advice, and paintings. I was charmed by her listing of specific scents of favorite peony varieties accompanied by a painted sample of their petal colors...”
Member Maria Von Brincken was recently featured as APLD’s “member of the Month". Her design received the APLD Design Award and was featured in the
Front Yard Idea Book (Taunton Press 2002). The featured design, "Everyday Retreat Friendly to Song Birds and Turkeys" reflects Maria’s training as a fine artist, color theorist, and graphic designer, as well as her training at the Radcliffe Seminars Landscape Program. Maria tackled a challenging site and created a series of beautiful garden spaces that celebrates the native landscape and enhances the home’s architecture. Visit

Maria’s design for a shade garden was featured as a “sweet spot” in HGTV's “Rate my Space” The shade garden "Swinging in the Ferns" groups masses of flowering astilbes and ferns along a stepping stone path that meanders and leads to an arbor bench swing, perfect for conversation or contemplating the beauty of nature.
